Shadows is a new performance collaboration between the artist Terry Smith and performer/composer Randolph Matthews.

This is a unique partnership bringing together their different backgrounds combining their personal histories with a joint desire to speak out about issues and concerns artistically and socially.

Shadows incorporates many different and diverse source material, drawn from personal experiences, observations with influences including Kafka’s 'The Metamorphosis', Mary Shelly’s 'Frankenstein' and the found sound of the dysfunctional beer dispensing machine in the Quarterhouse bar. The buildings own particular quirks and sounds are a significant factor in this site-specific performance work.

Shadows is a hybrid between performance, dance and theatre. A lone figure inhabits the space like a ghost. Barely aware of the other people in the room. drifting in and out of self awareness. At times performing for and reacting against the audience who sit and occupy the stage as much as the figure.

Randolph’s interdisciplinary compositions & vocal performances span over two decades where he has collaborated with artists from both the jazz, blues and contemporary art scene internationally, including grammy award winner Jazz legend Herbie Hancock and most recently as a composer for choreographer Alesandra Seutin's new work performed at Saddlers Wells and Southbank. He is currently composer in residence at Creative Folkestone Quarterhouse.

Terry’s entire art production is in one way or another site-specific. Creating interventions and disruptions in buildings and museums world-wide, including The British Museum, MACBA in Barcelona and at the Drawing Center in NY.

His performance work has largely been shown abroad, but this collaborative work follows on from 'Mirror Mirror' presented at the Quarterhouse in September this year where Randolph joined as a performer.

One of the major advantages working in a collaborative situation, is to share not only the ideas and direction but also the responsibility. We both came into the project prepared to listen and share ideas. T+R
