Work in Progress is a performance company founded by Terry Smith and Clare Fitzpatrick. Emerging from Smith’s background in contemporary visual art (www.terrysmith.studio) and his shift into live performance, the company creates stripped-back works that echo Smith’s cut out interventions in buildings.
At Resolution 24 Smith presented The Chair—a minimal solo work with one performer, a chair and no music. Other works include Mirror 2 (2023, Whitechapel Gallery), a study in memory and isolation; Shadows (2021), a site-specific sound and movement collaboration with Randolph Matthews; Mirror Mirror (2021), an ensemble improvisation exploring collective authorship; Foundlings (2014), an atmospheric in-the-round piece staged across European venues including Venice’s Ca’ Pesaro; and Combine (2012), an immersive performance blending dance, music, and projection at V22 Peckham.
Originally established in 2003 to support Smith’s large-scale installations and site-specific works, workinprogress has evolved through projects such as uncovered, Venice Agendas, Strangelove, and Speakeasy. Since 2022, it has refocused on performance, working with an evolving network of artists:
